Senior talks about telecom law

On national television, College senior Benjamin Wyche took part in an electrifying discussion on NewsTalk Television's latest session. Lisa Evers, former leader of the Guardian Angels, hosted the show which was televised Thursday morning. The focus of the interactive discussion was the controversial Communications Decency Act of the recently enacted Telecommunications Reform Bill. Wyche and other critics charge that the act violates the First Amendment. A trial is ongoing in a federal court in Philadelphia to overturn the law. Evers, Wyche, two other panelists and an information specialist were filmed in a New York City talk show building. The main topic of the show was whether the Internet should be regulated at all. During the second part of the show, Wyche dominated the discussion. "Many systems on the market today allow parents to see exactly what their children are seeing," he said. "It goes far beyond technology and fixes the problem." During the following segment, discussion turned to the legality of the CDA. "I don't see why the CDA should be restricted to pornography," Wyche said. "It all boils down to the parent's ability to deal with a child." On Wednesday night, Wyche attended a similar forum called "Encarta On the Record" at the "@Cafe." The host Linda Ellerbee organized a live interview and cyberforum in the cafe. Drawing from the "Encarta" model, Wyche has scheduled a similar forum for the University. The conference will be held in Alumni Hall of the Towne Building on Wednesday, March 27 beginning at 6 p.m. The University's forum will be part of the ENIAC celebration and will be televised in Japan.
