She is extremely well-known in the nursing field, as her doctoral thesis entitled "A Model for Quality Assurance" has served as the framework for nursing policy throughout the world since the 1970s. Lang is known for her dedication to all facets of nursing -- including clinical work, teaching and research. But she is also involved in policy-making decisions throughout the field. She serves on the National Advisory Committee of the Health and Human Services Agency for Health Care and Policy Research, and received the American Nurses Association Distinguished Membership Award in 1992. She is also on the board of directors of the Franklin Institute, a hands-on science center and museum in Philadelphia. Before coming to the University in 1992, Lang served as dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
