Call yesterday's gymnastics meet bad news for the bears. Penn beat not only the host Brown Bears but the visiting Ursinus Bears as well. The Quakers tallied 179.15 points to up their record to 7-2, 2-0 in the Ivy League. The hosts managed a respectable 167.625 points, while Ursinus garnered only 159.475, a total which earned it a third loss to Penn this season. While February in Providence doesn't quite compare to April in Paris, the Quakers traveled north with the single-minded purpose of asserting their position as defending Ivy League champions. After finishing behind Yale two weeks ago at the George Washington Invitational, Penn thought it would have a chance to redeem itself against the Elis last weekend at Hutch Gym. Unfortunately, old man winter put a damper on those plans. Inclement weather forced the battle of the Ivy League's preeminent powers to be postponed until the Ivy Classic at the end of this month. While the 179-plus points Penn managed doesn't represent its best effort to date, the Quakers certainly had to be pleased with the result considering an ailing Staci Standen was unable to make the trip after battling a nasty case of dehydration late last week. Certainly no one will ever confuse the shores of Providence's Seekonk River with the Seine's left bank. For the Penn gymnastics team, however, the trek to New England did yield success. It sent a message to the rest of the Ancient Eight, especially the Elis, that come the end of the month at the Ivy Classic, the Quakers will be ready to defend their crown.
