M.HOOPS NOTEBOOK: Guthrie ends playing days

Bill Guthrie, a junior forward who has received little playing time throughout his career, has left the men's basketball team. The athletic department cited "personal reasons." Guthrie played in three games for the Quakers this season, averaging 1.3 ppg. · Jed Ryan, a 6-foot-5 forward, will enroll at Penn, WJET-TV in Erie reported. Ryan is averaging 24 points per game and is a four-year starter for Cathedral Prep School. Cathedral won the state championship two years ago and lost in the finals last season. Ryan was recruited by colleges in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Big Ten. Ryan stayed with senior guard Scott Kegler when he came to Philadelphia for his recruiting trip. Both Kegler, who is from Columbus, Ohio, and Ryan played for Bobby Kortsen, who runs Dave Krider's basketball camps. Krider does the high school rankings for USA Today. · Penn posted its fourth straight win over La Salle Tuesday night at the Palestra. The game was technically a road contest for the Quakers, who donned their blue away uniforms. Penn agreed to be the road team as a courtesy to La Salle, which did not have the minimum number of home games mandated by the NCAA. NCAA rules deem a home court to be any arena where a team plays two of its games, so the Explorers switched a Feb. 11 game against Wright State from the Civic Center to the Palestra in order to comply. · The Quakers did not practice yesterday, but they will begin today to prepare for St. Joseph's, which they face Saturday at 5 p.m. at Alumni Fieldhouse in another unofficial Big 5 game. "At this point we're just going to be fine-tuning -- just perfecting the things we've been working on," Kegler said. That includes moving the ball around the perimeter, something Penn did successfully against La Salle.
