Since now is the time when graduation speakers are selected behind closed doors, we toss out these names for the appropriate committee -- and the Class of 1995 -- to consider. Mario Cuomo -- One of the most colorful figures in state politics, Cuomo's life accomplishments and his recent defeat in the New York gubernatorial race could provide interesting material for a graduation address. He is also one of the most eloquent speakers around?and has some free time on his hands. Toni Morrison -- This award-winning novelist has been a strong and influential voice on issues of race and gender, from Jazz to The Bluest Eye. Only drawback -- she's from Princeton. Tom Wolfe -- Wolfe's acerbic and insightful writing testifies to his eloquence, and some day he will be remembered as one of the premier authors of the 20th century. Unlike past speakers, his graduation speech would be anything but boring. Salman Rushdie -- By inviting this controversial writer, the University would reaffirm its long-beleaguered commitment to freedom of expression and freedom of thought. Security, however, might be an issue. William Rehnquist -- As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Rehnquist has been trying to put current issues affecting the country into a traditional context. His work is one of the defining aspects of contemporary conservatism. Douglas Coupland -- As author of Generation X, he originated the nom de guerre the media is trying to place on our generation. More importantly, he would address issues that are pertinent and meaningful to college students. Colin Powell -- One of the heroes of the Gulf War and a great military leader, Powell also has a very interesting personal history. Maya Angelou -- Not only is she one of the pre-eminent poets of our time, she is also one of the most compelling and inspirational speakers in America, as she showed at Clinton's inauguration. Jack Kemp -- Very respected independent-minded politician is tapped by many to be the next GOP candidate for the White House.
