Bernstein leads W. Tennis against Lehigh

For the second time this season, senior co-captain Barrie Bernstein faced Boston University's Heidi Steiber Sunday. The two met in the flight 'A' singles finals of the Brown Invitational. Unfortunately for Bernstein, the results were no different than their previous meeting at the Eastern Collegiates. Bernstein and the rest of the Penn women's tennis team return to Lott Courts this afternoon at 2 against Lehigh. In the first round of play, Bernstein defeated Steiber's doubles partner, Kerry Stakum, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. She then went on to beat players from Colorado and Brown before coming up against Steiber. The turning point of the match came in the first set. With the games tied at 4, a win would have put Bernstein in the position to take the lead. However, she lost the game and went on to lose the set, 7-5. "I kind of lost it from there," Bernstein said. "It was an emotional letdown. I couldn't get back into it." She then lost the second set, 6-1, to secure the runner-up status. The only other time Bernstein may face Steiber will be at the Rolex Tournament the last weekend in October. "It would have been nice to win," Bernstein said, "but I felt pretty good about my performance this weekend. I had some good wins." The competition with the Terriers did not end with singles play. After Bernstein and junior Preety Sorathia lost their first round to top-seeded North Carolina State, 7-5, 0-6, 1-6, they faced Stakum and Steiber in the flight 'A' doubles consolation round. "We weren't completely into that match," Bernstein said. "We never really gave it our all." This lack of intensity led the Quakers to a 6-2, 6-4, loss. Penn lost all four of its first-round doubles matches as well as the consolation rounds. In singles competition, however, the results were much more favorable. Freshman Andrea Grossman upset No. 1-seeded Michelle Magid in flight 'C' singles. Grossman won the three-hour match 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. "She was having a lot of trouble hitting her backhand, so I played to her weakness," Grossman said. "I tried to move around a lot and go for winners." Grossman then lost in the second round, 7-6, 6-0, to Colorado's Elizabeth Bartasius. Sorathia also lost in the first round of flight 'A' singles and again in the second consolation round.
