Students laud service residence

The Psi Upsilon fraternity may be re-recognized by the University this semester, but the chapter will not return to the Castle, its former home, for at least another year, if it all. Deputy Vice Provost George Koval said last week the Community Service Living Learning Program, which has been housed in the Castle since May, 1990, will remain there next year. Larry Rhein, program director for CSLLP, said 22 students live in the Castle this year, two less than the house's capacity. And Rhein said about six students from this year's program would live in the house again. Yesterday was the official deadline to apply for participation in next year's CSLLP program. "We want to provide some continuity and get some new people in," Rhein said. Nobody in the program knows if next year will be the CSLLP's last in the Castle, but Rhein said he is not worrying about where the program will be housed in the future. "We're sure [the program] will continue at another site," Rhein said. "The Castle is an obvious draw but the program has its own merits." Rhein said the program offers its residents a "ton of activities." In the last week, the Castle hosted a forum on AIDS awareness, and residents served meals to homebound AIDS patients, he added. Garth Feeney said he thinks the program is a great one. The Engineering junior has lived in the Castle for the past two years and said he enjoys living in a residence where community service is a main focus. Both Feeney and Rhein said the house is beautiful and that it is a main draw to the program. David Hafken, a College senior who has also lived in the Castle for two years, said he also has nothing but good things to say about the program. Hafken called the program a pioneer, adding that he does not think there are many other programs like this at other schools across the country. "This house is being used very well by this program," Hafken said. "I want very much for this program to stay in the Castle." Rhein said he feels the CSLLP is a good program to have on Locust Walk in order to ensure diversity. "It is a nice thing to be a co-ed residence on Locust Walk," he said. Currently Psi Upsilon and the University are in negotiations to determine whether the fraternity can return to the Castle if re-recognized. The University revoked Psi Upsilon's charter in 1990 after fraternity brothers kidnapped a member of Delta Psi, a rival fraternity. All members of Psi Upsilon were ultimately kicked out of the Castle.
