PHILBERTS

Slowdive Souvlaki Greek food, baby! It's the newest wave in New Wave, and it isn't lost on this quintet from Reading, England. With Souvlaki, their second album, Slowdive delivers its ethereal sound as easily as a Greek goat gives up the feta. The trippy tunes will leave you comatose, with visions of baklava dancing in your head. 3 1/2 Philberts. --Ned Silverman Orb Live '93 Who knows what type of sound Orb was striving for on its latest live CD. Call it techno if you like, bizarre is more like it. Orb's style combines odd sound bites and weird samples like high-pitched wailing and motorcycle revving. With digitized music, this is a very peculiar mix. Orb's place is in a movie soundtrack, not in your CD collection. 1/2 a Philbert. --David Quinton Unsane Total Destruction Unsane is obnoxious and discomforting. Growing out of the same New York scene that produced Helmet, this trio lacks creativity and attempts to come off as your worst nightmare to make up for it. Total Destruction is co-produced by former Sonic Youth producer Martin Bisi. 1/2 a Philbert. --Peter High The Dentists behind the door i keep the universe Don't fear a trip to The Dentists. Charmingly crafted post-punk busts out in some catchy '60s melodies. Lead singer Mick Murphy sounds a little like Morrissey and a lot like Big Bird, though he relinquishes enough emotion in his passages to allow musical sincerity. The other Dentists groove fast and politely. This sure ain't no couch sittin', teeth pickin' band. 3 Philberts. --Jared Young
