by Ned Silverman Welcome to Chimes Cafe, finally servicing the throngs of thirsty English majors south of Locust Walk. The music may be a little too loud and the patrons may think they're a little too cool, but hey, Billybob's hasn't been serving Ethiopian coffee recently. Chimes is a nice break from the rat race around here, Joseph Wharton certainly didn't hang out in places like this. Not to scare away any Fortune 500 boys, but don't expect to find many tailored suits reading the resident copy of Ionesco's Hermit. Located at 411 South 40th St. (between Pine and Baltimore), Chimes Cafe offers a great view of West Philly's finest across the street at the Thoroughgood Personal Care Facility. While taking in the sights, one can order mugs of domestic and imported coffees and a wide selection of teas by the pot or the cup. And for the famished, they've got big, chewy bagels and someday soon they'll begin serving soups and sandwiches well within a student's tight budget. Chimes is opened from 9 am to 10 pm on Mondays through Thursdays, and from 11 am to 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
