But this time was different. Luckily this Saturday, the person at the helm of the football team was a perfectionist named Bagnoli. He and his players were not deterred. They stuck to their game plan and, in the form of a comeback, proved that they so rightly deserved the title of "Ivy Champions." On Saturday, we all felt like champions. Our football team victorious, thousands of us rushed the field in jubilation, confronted the cops without trepidation, and dumped the goal posts into the Schuylkill with unmatched glee. For the first time in a year of tensions, transitional pains, and national scorn, we are all able to carry our heads high, and proudly tell the world that, yes, we are from Penn. We can boast that we are the only Ivy League school to ever have both its men's basketball and football teams go undefeated in league play in one calendar year. Now, we know that skeptics say that the victory over Cornell was "only a game" and nothing more. To them, we ask: is college just about academics? The football team's championship is something we will tell our grandchildren about. It is part of the many incidents and stories that make up our total Penn experience. Bagnoli and his team gave us a vicarious "thrill of victory," in a year filled with many defeats. The championship is hopefully the first in many steps to wipe the egg off our university's face. The team's hard work, class, and exciting play made us all proud. For this, we salute them. And anxiously wait for next season.
