How many laughs can the Advanced Directing Class produce in one hour? The Theatre Arts Program found out last night in performing the first half of its show Final Scenes before a small crowd of theater lovers. The six scenes performed last night, like the six to be shown tonight, were each directed by different students. Throughout, a light and fun atmosphere dominated each performance. College senior Liesel Euler, who acted in two scenes last night, said that she had "a wonderful time" with the show. "It was a little crazy because the scenes were slapdash -- we had to set our own stuff," Euler said after the performance. "It was a frenzy but fun." Euler portrayed Lois in A.R. Gurney's The Perfect Party, which details a humorous appeal for sex. Todd Lieberman, a College sophomore, offered an extremely funny character in this scene directed by College junior Dan Bisbee, ubiquitous in the performing arts world. Miss Julia, a subtle scene about dreams coming true, featured Euler and 1992 College graduate Seth Shulman. The spot ended the performance on a the same pleasant note which ran through the whole hour. College junior Sherri Cooper directed this scene, which was writted by August Strindberg. College freshman Brian Turnbaugh performed an intense rendition of a scene from Shakespeare's Macbeth, directed by College senior Dave Hafken. The only disappointment of the night was David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago, directed by College senior Jon Segal. Perhaps the fault lay in the script, perhaps the timing was off, but the audience was not particularly quick to applaud after this perplexing portrayal of dating. However, the hour was largely fun and enjoyable, and offered something for everyone. Six more scenes will be performed tonight at 8 in the Studio Theatre. The performance is free.
