Thieves hit area bank, take $1,240

Two males robbed the Penn Federal Credit Union at gunpoint yesterday morning, University Police Sergeant Larry Salotti said last night. Salotti said the two men were apprehended by University Police following the hold-up and are now being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Salotti said the men entered the bank, located at 3900 Chestnut Street, at around 9:30 a.m. and, brandishing a semi-automatic pistol, stole two cash boxes with cash and checks totalling over $1,240. The men fled the scene in a gold Chevrolet and then fled on foot after hitting a parked car at 36th and Spruce streets, Salotti said. Salotti said University Police officers apprehended one suspect in the Medical School Library and the other suspect in the fire tower of the Gates Building, which is part of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. University Police found controlled substances -- crack cocaine and marijuana -- on one of the suspects, Salotti said. He added that the recovered weapon and two cash boxes were turned over to the FBI. Following their arrests, the suspects, along with witnesses and complainants, were taken to Philadelphia Police detectives for questioning, Salotti said. In an unrelated incident, a student was reportedly assaulted by the manager at the WaWa at 36th and Chestnut streets early yesterday morning in a dispute over a doughnut, Salotti said. The student was taken to HUP by officers for treatment and was advised to file a private criminal complaint, Salotti said.
