Man seen prowling near DRL

Students who have classes in David Rittenhouse Laboratory have been put on alert. Physics Department Chairperson David Balamuth released a memo last week warning all faculty, staff and students that a former University undergraduate student with a history of disruptive behavior has been recently spotted in DRL. This would be in violation of a restraining order obtained in 1990 prohibiting the 26-year-old man, James Summers, from entering DRL, the memo reads. Balamuth said yesterday that the memo is a precautionary measure and added that Summers has not recently caused incidents "of any kind or of any concern." Students should not try to engage Summers in any way, Balamuth said in the memo. Instead, he said, students should call University Police. The memo also contains a mug shot of Summers, which was taken by University Police in 1989. He is described as a white male, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 130 pounds. University Police Sergeant Larry Salotti would not comment last night on Summers or his past history at the University but he said that, in general, "if anyone is creating a disturbance, students should not try to interact with the person and should notify campus police first." Balamuth said he hopes University Police are always mindful of DRL's security. "There are plenty of opportunities for problems," he said. "We certainly hope campus police will keep an eye on DRL always." Balamuth said most of the recent security problems at DRL have been property-related. Summers could not be reached for comment last night.
