Among George Allen's many misguided statements in his column "Shoot 'Em Up" (DP 4/1/92) perhaps the following one best sums up his warped thinking: "Crime can only be reduced by more Americans carrying guns." I do not think removing the quote from its context alters its intended meaning. What he overlooks is that people make mistakes. If everyone in America would draw a gun every time he feels threatened, certainly there would be an unacceptable number of these "mistakes." In a nutshell, it is absurd to think we can better society by becoming a bunch of macho, Dirty Harry vigilantes. KEVIN LOMBARDI Wharton '93
