LETTER: Mine Field

As a candidate for 1993 Class President, I am writing to express my disgust for the Class of 1992 Senior Board. After I was disqualified from the race, my name was left on the ballot and the board allowed people to continue voting for me. Brandt McKee, the current president, said that my name was not removed from the ballot to avoid "a potentially embarassing and emotional situation." I may be emotional, but I am anything but embarassed about being disqualified for inadvertantly placing two posters togeter. They are the ones who should be embarassed for their enforcement of these petty rules. I would have wanted them to explain to every person exactly why I was disqualified. Contrary to their claims, the rules for the election were not there to create a fair playing field, but rather a mine field. Instead of fostering an amiable environment between candidates, the rules encouraged candidates to spy on one another for insignificant violations. So, why am I writing this letter? Because of the inadequacies of the Class of 1992 Board, my class has lost the opportunity to choose its true representative. My hope is that in the upcoming year, the senior board will be able to revise the current election policies and thereby enable the Class of 1994 to carry on a more civil, reasonable campaign. Keep it in perspective; keep it in the spirit of democracy, even if we cannot pull it off in the real world. Perhaps the implementation of an appeals process would be a good place to start.
