I was very disappointed with your article about the issues involved with the patent for Retin A (DP 2/3/92). The piece was provocative and inflammatory. At the present time, the University, Dr. Kligman and Johnson and Johnson are working diligently to find a solution. Dr. Kligman is a highly respected and revered member of our faculty. He has contributed enormously to advances in cutaneous biology and therapy. Furthermore, he has been extremely generous with the royalties from the sale of Retin A. These monies have been used for research, education and academic development. The legal issues involved in the present conflict are extremely complicated. Many of us are hopeful that the Retin A controversy will be settled by thoughtful discussion in the near future. Conciliation, not confrontation, is the need for today.
