We are very tempted to provide the reader with a few quotes from The Encyclopedia Britannica on the status of women in Judaism, or perhaps Christianity. We won't, however, allow ourselves to become part of such a game. Muslims, just as Christians and Jews, agree on certain constants, including the uniqueness and transcendence of God and the unity of Prophethood. On such matters as the status of women in Islam there are a host of different readings, each with its own documentation and reasoning. The Encyclopedia Britannica represents no more than one such reading, and an increasingly unpopular one among Muslims as well. As sons, brothers and husbands of powerful, committed Muslim women, we share Reshma Yaqub's reading of the status of women in Islam.
