Yes, it's blackmail . . . but it's for a good cause! Yet, what first seems to be an intelligent, idealistic concept is actually not a good idea at all. In reality, 20 lawmakers are threatening to go beyond making laws and start doing the job of the judicial system. The Public Interest Law Center of Philadelphia has filed a class action suit alleging the University does not provide the number of scholarships it once promised to Philadelphia high school students. The University vigorously objects to these claims. Eventually the courts will decide who is right -- and the University should be "presumed innocent" in this civil case until proven otherwise. People's personal opinions should basically remain personal until then. If these lawmakers had merely complained that the University does too little for the community, they might stand on more solid ground. But the Mayor's Scholarship lawsuit -- that's a matter for the courts to decide. Not 20 renegade lawmakers.
