    Fred Smoot on campus?

Harvard lost a second key component as a result of a preseason suspension, head football coach Tim Murphy announced.

Quarterback Liam O'Hagan was suspended five games for an unspecified violation of team rules.

    NBA Draft, Penn style

We've written a few articles over the last year about how many potential 2006 NBA draftees Penn has played against recently.

    Give us a break

Close to 50,000 people turned out today for the Penn Relays at Franklin Field -- about 20 of them were Penn students.

It's a shame that more students didn't take a study break on such a beautiful day and head down to the Relays.

    Better than caffeine

Now here's a good way to wake people up on a Saturday morning: get four Jamaican teams in a high school 4x400m relay.

    The Maroon and the Blue?

At Hey Day today, Penn president Amy Gutmann gave the juniors a three-question quiz before officially pronouncing them seniors.

Question 1: Which famous coach just left the Red and Blue for the Maroon and the Blue?

    You stumped me Dr. Gutmann.

    Who needs sleep?

Congratulations to 1996 Penn alumnus Dan Leibovitz, the former Temple assistant who was officially named the new head men's basketball coach at Hartford yesterday.

While the implications of the hire were covered in today's DP, I can't help but note here something Leibovitz said at his press conference today, when asked the inevitable question about his former boss John Chaney's legendary practice schedules.

"No we're not going to practice at 5:30 a.m.," he said.

    Thanks Professor Dunphy

It's certainly sad to see Fran Dunphy leave Penn. He was a fantastic coach, a great guy and to me -- as well as countless other sportswriters at The Daily Pennsylvanian -- the greatest journalism professor at Penn.

You see, this University has a lot of things (heck, we even have a huge white button sitting in the middle of campus) but one thing it lacks is a journalism department.

    It's official

If you're reading this while sipping your morning coffee, the word officially went out late last night that Fran Dunphy has accepted the offer to become Temple's head coach.

When I first heard the news, I was not surprised, but I nonetheless could not help lamenting the end of an extraordinary era of Penn basketball.

    Seventeen thousand words

DALLAS -- We've just posted a big photo gallery of Friday's Penn-Texas game on dailypennsylvanian.com, which you can view by clicking here. Enjoy.

    Press conference day

DALLAS -- Greetings from the bowels of the American Airlines Center, where the Dallas Mavericks' practice court has been transformed into the media center for this weekend's NCAA Tournament games.

    DP does Dallas (Day 1)

DALLAS -- Life is good when you're a basketball player.

While the team flew directly from Philadelphia to Dallas this morning, last minute tickets like that weren't quite affordable on a sportswriter's budget.

    The true last amateurs

Four years ago, longtime college basketball writer John Feinstein published a book called The Last Amateurs which dealt with the Patriot League and its lack of athletic scholarships, specifically in basketball.
