Two tournaments into the spring season, Penn men’s golf claimed its first trophy at the George Washington Invitational this weekend in Bethany Beach, Del.
The Quakers shot their worst round of the tournament in the final 18 holes Saturday, but they had built up enough of a cushion to hold on for the win, tallying an 880 overall, and edging out host George Washington and Yale, which tied for second.
Junior Scotty Williams, who claimed the individual title at the Ivy League Championship last year, was leading the field after two rounds of play Friday, but carded an 81 Saturday, nine strokes over par, to fall back to sixth overall. Williams shot a tournament-best 67 in the second round Friday.
Sophomore P.J. Fielding surged with a 73 — tied for the best round on Saturday — to lead the Quakers and take third place, hitting 219 overall.
The Colonials’ Andres Pumariega took home the individual title, shooting 215 over the 54-hole tournament.
