Calling all veggie-lovers: there’s now something that might give Sweetgreen a run for its money. On Friday, the vegetarian and vegan restaurant HipCityVeg opened its doors on 40th Street between Walnut and Locust streets.
HipCityVeg’s 100 percent plant-based menu includes salads, sandwiches and milkshakes, including its signature “groothies” — smoothies with leafy greens, apples and seasonal fruits.
“It will be a good addition to campus, and provide for another alternative with different type food options,” said Ed Datz, executive director of real estate at Penn’s Facilities and Real Estate Services.
For those who want a late night snack (or a really late dinner), the 35-seat restaurant will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
The University City restaurant is HipCityVeg’s second location; its original location is on 18th Street in Rittenhouse Square.
“Overall, I think it will be a very nice addition to the variety of food and beverage offerings,” Datz said.
Won Oriental Restaurant, which used to occupy the spot, closed its doors at the end of 2012 after the manager fell ill.
