The Red and Blue finally arrived back home on Friday night, and they brought their winning ways with them. After closing out its season-opening doubleheader with two straight wins last weekend, Penn volleyball defeated Fairfield in its home opener, 3-1, on Friday to extend its winning streak to three contests. The Quakers (3-2) were paced as usual by seniors Alexis Genske, who tallied 15 kills, and Alex Caldwell, who had 12 kills without an error.

The old saying goes, two’s company, three’s a crowd, four’s too many. But for coach Fuller and the Quakers, four might be the magical number. Penn has four great options for the goalkeeping position, according to the team, but only time will tell if four is truly too many or a blessing. “I could probably say without hesitation, I’ve been at Penn 18 years and this is probably the deepest goalkeeping crop that I’ve had in my time at Penn,” Fuller said.

Senior goalkeeper Max Polkinhorne put on a clinic against No. 7 Washington on Friday, notching eight saves and recording a shutout.

It is by no means uncommon for a weekend doubleheader to feature clear high- and low-water marks. Only this weekend for Penn men’s soccer, the high point found them threatening to summit the pinnacle of the collegiate landscape, and the low point featured a team that was almost unrecognizable from earlier.

In a year marked by attrition and adversity, the Quakers fought hard for their 8-9 record in 2014. And this leaves the Red and Blue in a situation both exciting and precarious looking towards 2015, a year which could reasonably be marked by either further struggles or breakthrough.

Sasha Stephens was recently named Ivy Rookie of the Week.

Fresh off a successful season opener, Penn women’s soccer turns this weekend to games against Temple and Mount Saint Mary’s at Rhodes Field. The Quakers (1-0-0) will look to continue the strong offensive play that guided them to a 3-1 victory over Seton Hall last Sunday.
