After displaying a new core of talent in its opening weekend, the defending Ivy League champion Penn volleyball team is set to pick up where it left off.

This year the Penn volleyball team is attempting to improve on a 23-6 season that included an Ivy League title.

The Quakers’ season opener on Sept. 3 against Temple will be broadcast around the Philadelphia region by the Comcast Network.

As the defending Ivy League champion, the Penn volleyball team enters the 2010 season faced with the loss of six seniors to graduation, including 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year, Elizabeth Semmens.

The Quakers (23-6) didn't enter the match with much reason for hope, as the Nittany Lions (33-0) had won an NCAA record 96 consecutive matches (now 97) and had only lost five sets the entire season.

The Quakers earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory on Friday night, winning, 3-1, over the Black Knights.

The Quakers (21-5, 12-1 Ivy) will resume their archrivalry against Princeton (11-13, 9-4) 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Palestra.

Despite an uncharacteristic loss, the volleyball team still clinched the outright share of the Ivy title.

If Penn wins just one of its matches this weekend against Harvard or Dartmouth, it will have sole possession of the crown once again.
