Junior Jason Pinsky fought hard in his semifinal tennis match. Behind the supportive crowd that shouted "Go Pinsky!" after almost every point, he came up with numerous scrappy shots. In the end, however, the home crowd left disappointed as a strong start to the third set by Virginia Tech's Arvid Puranen proved to be too much for Pinsky, Penn's top-seeded player, to overcome.

Over the weekend, the Penn volleyball team got a reality check at the hands of Yale and Brown and limped home with two disappointing road losses. Eager to prove themselves in the strong Ivy League, the young Quakers lost 3-0 to the Elis and 3-2 to the Bears.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - In a game that came down to field goals, Penn's struggles continued when it mattered most. In overtime, Yale kicker Alan Kimball connected for the game-winning field goal from 35 yards out after Penn kicker Derek Zoch banged his 37-yard attempt off the right goal post during Penn's overtime drive.

Bill Wagner has not coached a team that has finished below .500 in the last 10 years, but this year may break that streak. After a second loss to Cornell 21-7, for the Penn sprint football team, the goals have drastically changed from the beginning of the season.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Neither the cold Connecticut breeze nor Yale could stop the red-hot Penn field hockey team. The Quakers continued their recent success with another offensive onslaught. Penn was able to get off 23 shots, 12 of which on goal, en route to a 3-2 victory.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. Penn football coach Al Bagnoli seems to have the luxury of quite the selection when it comes to choosing who will be under center for the Quakers. Bagnoli employed a combination of both starting sophomore Robert Irvin and junior backup Bryan Walker in the game against Yale on Saturday, much like he has throughout this season.

The year wasn't supposed to go this way for the Yale men's soccer team. One year removed from an Ivy League co-championship and an NCAA Tournament berth, the Elis returned nine starters and 14 players in all. But with this year's Ivy League season more than half over, the Elis are a shadow of their old selves.

For this year's incarnation of the annual tradition known as the Line, Penn basketball fans won't only be taking their sleeping bags - they'll be taking a road trip. The event will take place the weekend of Nov. 3-4, when Penn students will first be able to purchase season tickets for the men's basketball team.

Last weekend, the Penn run defense shut down Jordan Davis and Columbia, allowing just 28 yards the entire game. But the Quakers will be facing a much more powerful opponent tomorrow in Yale running back Mike McLeod.

Nothing was going right three weeks ago. The Quakers had lost two games in a row and four out of five. A 2-1 defeat to Dartmouth at the end of that stretch effectively ended Penn's title hopes. Since then, the Quakers have scored 11 goals during a season-high four-game winning streak.

Yale kicker Alan Kimball sent a 35-yard field goal through the uprights in overtime on Saturday to send the Quakers to a 17-14 loss on Saturday, dropping Penn into a tie for third place in the Ivy League. The game-ending kick followed a missed 37-yard attempt from Penn's Derek Zoch.

Penn's sprint football captain Dave Lopez hopes last year's loss to Cornell will not be reprised this year. Having beaten Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., at the beginning of last season, the Quakers were upended at home by a revitalized Big Red squad, 24-17 later in the year.

This week's Ivy League slate includes three games that feature several compelling storylines. One of the two league powers of the decade meets a program looking for its first title in over a decade. A starting quarterback returns from a five-game suspension to find himself in the backup spot.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Keith Vereb played an hour and a half of soccer here on Saturday, but he really only needed three minutes. They came at the opening of Penn's must-win match at Yale, when the Quakers came out firing and earned a free kick from upwards of 30 yards out.

With an Ivy League title no longer a possibility, the Penn women's soccer team hits the road again this weekend hoping to knock off defending champion Yale. Despite an impressive 7-4-1 overall record, Penn enters tomorrow's contest just 1-3 in conference play.

A rigorous stretch of seven games in 22 days is taking its toll on the Penn men's soccer team with the most important part of the schedule fast approaching. The last of those seven games is a pivotal clash tomorrow at Yale, and Penn will have to go at it with at least one of its defenders relegated to the sidelines by injury.
