Men's Soccer vs. Brown

While Penn’s own Duke Lacroix helped the Nor’easters fight to say in the contest, as they responded to an early Union goal, it wasn’t enough, as the Nor’easters couldn’t undo the late minute heroics of the MLS’ Philadelphia Union.

It only took 60 minutes of regulation and three overtime periods, but 31 seconds into that third overtime of the NCAA Championship, North Carolina put a Maryland team that came into the title game with a perfect record down for the count, winning, 13-12.

On Tuesday night, rising senior Jonny Dolezal, fellow classmate Stephen Baker and rising junior Duke Lacroix took the field to play in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

For Chris Johnson, cycling was always a natural hobby. He grew up in the part of California where the mountain bike was invented, so it only made sense that he would end up biking. In high school and throughout college, however, he went off the beaten bike path and ended up competing in track and field. However, Johnson, a 2005 College graduate, never forgot his passion for cycling.

Just under 10,000 people showed up for the women’s final on Sunday night, while 29,000 fans made their way down Broad Street to take in the men’s final on Monday afternoon. For me, coming from a high school without football and a college where, admittedly, sports are not a top priority, I was stunned.

Going into the national championship, Duke face-off specialist Brendan Fowler had already earned the NCAA single-season record for face-off wins. While each face-off win doesn’t matter any more than the next when it comes to that record, the 20 that Fowler accumulated on Monday afternoon will mean a little more to Fowler. After all, it was on his shoulders that Duke became the national champions, going on a 16-6 run from the second quarter until the end of the game to come back from an early Syracuse lead, ultimately winning, 16-10. Fowler won 20 of 28 face-offs, allowing Duke (16-5) to maintain possession for the majority of the contest. “Obviously winning face offs and getting the ball back makes it a lot easier to score goals,” Fowler said.

The Red and Blue came off of a 12-0 shutout at the hands of the Texas A&M Aggies heading into its elimination game versus the Arizona Wildcats in College Station. On Saturday, the Quakers (30-20) battled with a storied Arizona (33-25) team, coming up just short in extra innings, 3-2.

Ryan Deitrich won’t be returning to Penn for his final year of eligibility after missing his freshman campaign due to injury, but he’ll still be playing college baseball — as a Duke Blue Devil.

Sparked by a goal from Casey Bocklet with 3:01 left in the first period, Virginia scored seven unanswered goals, demoralizing the Quakers en route to a 12-6 win that drew the Red and Blue’s season to an abrupt close at Georgetown’s Washington, D.C. campus.

This was a great year for Penn women’s sports. Am I right, ladies? Am I right? The penny slots were successful — I’ll credit my grandmother, who was known to win hundreds of dollars at a time on these games, for the lucky genes — and I went a respectable 3-for-5 on my predictions from earlier this fall. That’s a heck of a lot better than last’s years picks by Brian Kotloff, who went 3-for-9.

From sitting next to him at Sunday breakfast, I learned everything I know about sports and sports writing. We’d sit together and read a profile on an up-and-coming pitcher or a big feature on the college football bowl games. He taught me how to read box scores and stat sheets, and when breakfast was over and the weather was nice, we’d all go to the park with a wiffle ball and bat or a frisbee.

One of the most challenging things I have ever done. Working on a deadline, thinking critically quickly and building relationships with coaches and athletes are all things that have tested me. But it is because of these challenges that I have found my four years with the DP one of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Penn.
