Taking the bull by the horns

David Beckham's high-profile move to Major League Soccer in July has seen media attention for America's young league skyrocket in recent weeks. But Penn soccer fans, at least, have had something else to cheer for this summer. Former Quakers goalkeeper Danny Cepero and his MLS team, the New York Red Bulls, are in the midst of an exciting season with playoff and championship aspirations.

Yale - the only league team to beat the Quakers last year - unrolled its difficult slate last week. It features a pair of trips to the Pac-10, with games at Stanford and UCLA, as well as a trip to Kansas's Allen Fieldhouse. Trips to UMass and Patriot League champion Holy Cross will also pose a steep challenge to last year's Ivy runners-up.

With 52 years of fencing under his belt, Penn coach Dave Micahnik is more than just a fixture in the sport - he is an all-time great. And he is finally being recognized for this as the United States Fencing Association recently elected him for induction into the Hall of Fame.

While it's not strange for schools to hire within, often promoting assistants to head coaching jobs, it's a little more unusual for a current head coach to take on a second top position. But that could be how Penn will end up filling the men's golf coaching position, left vacant after Rob Powelson resigned in late June.

Good news, Quakers fans: the next Matt Valenti may be just around the corner. Zack Kemmerer has built a name for himself in his own right and will likely continue to do so. However, it is difficult not to compare him with Valenti, Penn's winningest wrestler of all-time and a two-time national champion at 133 pounds.

It's needless to say that the first meeting between Hamilton Southeastern and Fishers High Schools was a big game for the players on both sides - the schools were combined as one just a year before. And incoming freshmen football players and twins Nate and Josh Powers teamed up to leave their mark on the game.

The Daily Pennsylvanian sits down to learn about one of Penn's newest hires - and where you'll always find him on Opening Day.

Teresa Leyden took batting practice. She fielded grounders and then caught some fly balls. But the former Penn softball player and recent graduate wasn't trying out for a professional team and looking to extend her playing career. Instead she found herself at Phillies ballgirl tryouts last fall.

Ibrahim Jaaber might be raising eyebrows for the Detroit Pistons in the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League, but Harvard grad Brian Cusworth is having a much quieter week. The Crimson big man, who used his last semester of eligibility in fall 2006, has submitted solid, if unspectacular numbers for the Golden State squad, which also includes former Bradley center Patrick O'Bryant.

If school policy and the law weren't enough to keep Penn athletes away from marijuana, the NCAA has just upped the ante. According to a June 22 USA Today article, the NCAA may expand its drug testing program to include year-round screening for street drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.

No one can accuse Dartmouth's Ben True of not being 'true' to his word, at least not this outdoor track season. Crossing the finish line at 3:59.99 during the U.S.A. Track and Field New England championship held at MIT, True joined an elite group of less than 300 American men who have ran a sub-four minute mile.

Honey, about that job you just took down in Georgia.

Looking for the best volleyball experience she could find, Deitre Collins-Parker went from Ithaca, N.Y. to Athens, Ga. and back again in a few short months - but don't call her indecisive. After all, Collins-Parker had much more than her own coaching career to think about.

W. Lax went from worst to first

Penn has 26 varsity head coaches. Only one won a national coach of the year award during the 2006-07 season: women's lacrosse coach Karin Brower. Led by Brower's self-described "straightforward and honest" coaching style, the Quakers achieved their best season ever, including their highest national ranking.

Fuller looks in his old doghouse for recruits

Usually, when someone from your alma mater calls, they're asking for a gift. But for men's soccer coach Rudy Fuller, it's Georgetown that's been doing the giving. The Penn coach has the Hoyas to thank for his college degree and his first coaching job, but the most recent gifts were just as helpful.
