Penn wrestling officially finished their 2016-2017 season this past St. Patrick’s day weekend, with five of the team’s top wrestlers taking on the nation’s best at the Scottrade Center in St.

The rain wasn’t the only thing putting a damper on Penn men’s lacrosse’s Alumni Day. After blitzing the No. 19 Quakers with a 7-1 run to open up the game, No. 15 Princeton proceeded to dominate the rest of the contest as well en route to a 17-8 victory.

It doesn’t get worse than this. There’s no sugarcoating what we just saw; Penn women’s basketball choked. And as much as it pains me to say it both as a journalist and a fan, that’s the evidence that coach Mike McLaughlin’s program isn’t quite at the next level yet.

It all comes down to this. For Penn wrestling, the entire season culminates in St. Louis when five Quakers will travel to the Scottrade Center for the NCAA Tournament. The Quakers are hoping for a third all-American in the last four years.

On Wednesday, Penn was set to host its home opener against crosstown rivals Villanova. Instead, with Meikeljohn Stadium blanketed with snow, the game was postponed, and is likely to be rescheduled sometime next month. The home opener is now scheduled to be against Lehigh next Wednesday.

Now the real season begins for Penn men’s lacrosse. The team’s climb back to the top ten begins this Saturday at Franklin Field against No. 15 Princeton in the Ivy League opener.

They’ve been here before. In fact, this is their third trip to the NCAA Tournament in four years. But a first NCAA Tournament win in program history still eludes the women of Penn basketball. The Quakers will be hoping that the third time is the charm when they tip off against Texas A&M in the first round of March Madness on Saturday night in Los Angeles.

For Penn, there’s at least one group they can count on: this year’s distance squad is up to the challenge. Focused around a strong core of seniors, both the men and women come into 2017’s outdoor season with momentum from cross country in the fall and indoor track in the winter.

For Penn track and field, 2016 was a year brimming with accolades and fraught with never-before-seen accomplishments — but there was still even more left on the table.

Despite the storm, Penn track and field is preparing to co-host the Philadelphia College Classic on Friday at Franklin Field. After exceeding expectations during the indoor season, Penn’s throwers and jumpers are gearing up for a big outdoor season.

This Friday’s Philadelphia College Classic marks the kickoff of the outdoor season, and for many freshmen the first opportunity to compete at Franklin Field wearing the Red and Blue.

While most Penn students were making their way to exotic locations like Puerto Vallarta and Cabo for Spring Break, many Penn student-athletes were embarking on their annual spring training trips.

Without a doubt, the inaugural Ivy League tournament was a success by any definition of the word. But was it the best move for the league to make? Ultimately, I’m still skeptical.

Penn's victories this weekend showcased some of the best this team has to offer: great ball movement on offense and stingy defense that forces teams to make tough shots and Michelle Nwokedi dominating on both sides of the ball. But even still, there are plenty of questions left for this team as they approach the NCAA Tournament.
