Fresh off conquering a mountain, W. Lax now confronts a molehill

The Columbia women's lacrosse team may just be a pebble in the Quakers' shoe. And Saturday's game against the Lions is a small obstacle in Penn's campaign for its first Ivy title since 1982. Though the Lions (3-5) have not proven to be much of an opponent in the past, the Quakers are still starting their usual lineup.


Lawyers for mayoral candidate Bob Brady petitioned the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Friday to take jurisdiction away from a lower court and decide the status of Brady's candidacy. A local judge decided last week that Brady would be allowed to stay on the May 15 primary ballot after his candidacy was challenged for allegedly filling out campaign finance-disclosure forms incorrectly.

For the lucky residents of Mayer Hall, laundry troubles may be a thing of the past. Penn officials and representatives from Mac-Gray Corporation, the company that manages Penn's laundry services, officially opened the newly renovated laundry room in Stouffer House's Mayer Hall last night.

Attention, college coaches: You're overpaid. So says Andrew Zimbalist, an economics professor at Smith College and one of the most renowned sports economists in the country. Zimbalist addressed an intimate crowd at the Penn Bookstore last night, reading an excerpt from his new book, The Bottom Line: Observations and Arguments on the Sports Business, before fielding questions for nearly an hour.

The City Council overrode a veto by Mayor John Street to keep a referendum banning casinos in any of Philadelphia on the May 15th ballot. Street vetoed the legislation passed by Council this month that would limit casinos to sites that are 1,500 feet or more away from any residence, church or school.

Mayer Hall installs brand-new laundry room

Ailing RHP happy to help out at short, too

When Penn shortstop William Gordon tweaked his shoulder last week, the Quakers weren't just in danger of losing their No. 6 hitter - they would have been a man short in the bullpen as well. Luckily for Penn, the freshman will be available to be the man the middle infield for this weekend's home doubleheaders against Harvard and Dartmouth.

Voter turnout may be at a record high of 41.4 percent, but the message of the voters hasn't changed: They like the status quo. The results of the student-government elections were released last night, and, of the 53 positions up for grabs, only 12 were filled by new faces.


After catching a breath, Softball moves to Ivies

Off to its best start in a very long time, the Penn softball team isn't letting two losses to Lehigh get it down. "Our focus has always been on league play so we're not dwelling on the games from Tuesday," head coach Leslie King said. "We're really excited for this weekend.

The Penn Police Department was re-accreditatied by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies this month, according to a PPD press release. The PPD became the first international accredited campus police agency within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania when it received its initial accreditation award in March 2001.

With no easy solution, a decision regarding the move of the liquor store could go either way. The looming controversy regarding the possible move of the 41st and Market streets liquor store to 4237 Walnut St. is still unresolved, with a ruling from the city zoning board expected to come sometime in the next week.

Hip-hop artist Papoose will join Juelz Santana to headline the annual SPEC-TRUM spring concert, organizers announced late last week. The concert will be held downtown at the Theatre of the Living Arts on April 20 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be bought either on Locust Walk or through Ticketmaster.

Some students are calling on the University to investigate whether its policy on blood donations is discriminatory. This issue and others were on the agenda at last night's University Council meeting. The UC, composed of faculty, undergraduates, graduate students and University administrators, convenes each month to discuss University-wide issues.

In 1986, the three-point line was implemented nationally for men's basketball. It was meant to be a long shot, but has become a chip shot. Now, many want to see its original intention returned. Cornell coach Steve Donahue would like to see the three-point line moved back when all of the men's basketball coaches meet in Atlanta for the Final Four this weekend.

After so much success on the court, the seniors of this year's Ivy champion basketball team now find themselves headed in different directions.

Defense reversed history last night. The Penn women's lacrosse team had never won a game in five tries against Johns Hopkins. But that changed in a hurry when the No. 14 Quakers thrashed the No. 12 Blue Jays 12-4 in Baltimore. "This was our biggest win of the year," coach Karin Brower said.

Incoming freshmen will no longer have to rely on chat rooms or online videos to figure out which college house to apply to. PennSpace, a new bulletin-board Web site designed to help incoming students decide where to live, will go live today at 5 p.m., when hundreds of applicants will receive their admissions decisions.
