Fall 2013 Undergraduate Assembly Elections

Since it was passed in 1993, the Clinton administration's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy has prevented open members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community from serving in the military due to claims of persecution and forced resignations. Fortunately for those the policy affects, times may change with the new presidential administration - a change many in the LGBT community would welcome on campus.

High-rise residents and Nursing students may have extra incentive to nix the elevators for stairs in the future. The Undergraduate Assembly's Civic and Community Engagement Committee has drafted a proposal to paint the stairwells in a number of buildings, including Harnwell, Harrison and Rodin college houses and Claire Fagin Hall.

It was Joni Mitchell and later Coldplay who sang, "You don't know what you have till it's gone." That couldn't be truer now as we enter the season of state-budget addresses. This year, in these economic times, a lot of people are understandably upset as jobs are lost and programs are cut.

Last night, business fraternity Alpha Kappa Psi embraced the relationship between business and philanthropy at its second annual corporate benefit in the Woodlands Ballroom of the Inn at Penn. The corporate benefit is Alpha Kappa Psi's signature event and one of the largest philanthropic events on campus.

One perk of being at Penn is that one often gets to see, meet and hear first-hand from world-renowned scholars and influential leaders - Anderson Cooper, the CEO of Coca Cola company, just to name a few. And this semester, Nicholas Kristof will be added to that list - the award-winning journalist will speak at the Ambani Auditorium in Huntsman Hall tonight at 6:30 p.

Two Jews, two Palestinians, a law student and a recent alum sounds more like the makings of a joke than the makings of a non-profit microfinance company. But gathered in Huntsman Hall last night, the founders of lendforpeace.org were not kidding around as they celebrated the launch of their Web site.

W. Hoops | Biemer starts on Lions F Lomax

Judie Lomax hardly seems like an intimidating figure. The Columbia sophomore stands at a pedestrian 5-foot-11 - if anything undersized at her forward position - and plays for a historically meek Lions squad that has never posted a winning record in the Ivy League.

Students enduring freezing wind, rain or snow while waiting for Penn Transit may be in for a shorter wait thanks to the recent installation of a GPS tracking system. Operational since September last year, the service enables students to check when the shuttle or bus they are waiting for will arrive at the desired transit stop.

The schedule said Penn versus La Salle, but swimming coach Mike Schnur noticed another, more personal, competition occurring. "We have a lot of guys who know some guys from La Salle and had a lot of local bragging rights on the line," the coach said of his men's team.

UMOJA, the umbrella organization for 26 black student groups, elected its new board last week. The Daily Pennsylvanian sat down with College sophomore and newly-elected planning and facilitating chairman Ryan Jobson and College sophomore and newly-elected correspondence chairwoman Erica Holland.

Sorority bids increase 19 percent

It's all in the numbers for Greek recruitment this year - and the numbers are looking good. The 2009 recruitment season attracted students in larger numbers than last year, in spite of concerns that, amid the economic crisis, the dues fraternity and sorority members must pay might deter students from rushing.

Nothing adds fuel to the fire of a fraternal rivalry like a little game of one-on-one. No blood, no foul. Usually the older brother will do whatever it takes to hold off his younger sibling. Columbia's freshmen point guard Steve Egee learned this reality all too well from growing up with his brother Kevin, Penn's senior two-guard.

Let's be blunt: Glen Miller's line about Remy Cofield, the one Penn used to break the news that he was leaving, was contradicted by Cofield himself. Miller's statement read, in part: "Remy has been dealing with some ongoing family situations, and has reached a point where he feels it is in his best interests to spend more of his time focusing on them.

Penn's funding from the state would decrease by 16 percent in Gov. Ed Rendell's 2009-10 budget proposal, which was released yesterday. The appropriation would fall from $46.4 million to $38.8 million, according to the state's budget Web site. The largest share of this allotment would go to Penn's Veterinary School, the only school of its type in the state.

Is a nose job medically necessary? Sometimes. What about a sex change? That has been the question raised recently by transgender individuals and their supporters. They contend that the University's lack of health care coverage for sexual-reassignment surgery violates Penn's non-discrimination policy.

In an effort to increase residential safety around campus after an armed home invasion and sexual assault on Dec. 19, the Division of Public Safety wants students to get to know their neighbors. DPS encouraged this community-based crime prevention technique, referred to as "Vertical Town Watch," during a meeting last week with University City landlords.

M. Swimming | Mixing it up in the pool

Mike Schnur is getting bored. In the men swimming team's final dual meet of the season, the coach is making his distance swimmers sprint and his breaststrokers swim freestyle. Schnur's explanation? Just for the hell of it. Today, the Quakers (6-5) will finish up their regular season at LaSalle (3-5) before the ECAC, EISL and NCAA championships.

According to Hillel director Jeremy Brochin, Penn Hillel received a $1 million donation to run and revamp Hillel, as well as to support students. Anna Dubin, wife of the late Irwin Dubin, made the contribution in memory of her husband, a Penn alumnus. The donation will be paid over the course of several years.
