Times are tough these days. Breadlines are longer than ever and even though shantytowns are where all the rebels hang out, we're really missing four walls and a roof. Damn. Anywho, this week Street attempts to brighten your day and show you the joys of this depressing life! Deal or New Deal?
As far as Street traditions go, we've got some good ones. Shoutouts (in two weeks!), Freshman Superlatives, Sweeper... but really it's Cultural Elite, our yearly index of the who's-who of the senior class, that is the most difficult to put together. But somehow, painstakingly, we've narrowed the 2,500–odd of us down to the most notable 79.
Because they're hip? On your hip? Or we're hip. Oh, so hip.
Well, we suppose Street got a little jealous of all that wonderfully extensive DP and UTB coverage of all things midterm elections, and decided to hop on the bandwagon. This week's centerspread is a look Penn electioneering -- political organizations on campus and their roles during election season. Penn power couple Matt Amalfitano and Ali Huberlie are Egos of the Week, Food and Drink takes a look at Philly's Italian Market, and Film takes a look at the history of NC-17 ratings in the cinema industry. Music digests Kanye's new 'music-movie' Runaway, Arts debates the Barnes Foundation's upcoming move intown, and Lowbrow fills you in on Philadelphia's failed city marketing campaigns.
On stands, inside the DP right now!
Stop! Drop those books! (Drop that class?) Read some Street!
So draw up your chalk square maze (careful not to scrape your knuckles!), gather up some friends, sit down on number 4 and pull out this week's issue of Street. All together now -- we've gossip and tales of lonely Fall Breaks in Highbrow, Ego of the Week (plus dog) Jessie Spellman and a glimpse at Philly's new casino in Ego and a Food and Drink section that will make you want to drink drink drink.
Here at Street, we happen to think that 'f' is a particularly noble letter. Just think, without 'f,' no for! Or food! Or fondle. And definitely no "Fuck You" by CeeLo. And poor Phillies General Counsel Richard Strouse, who we've profiled for this week's cover story -- phraud? phranchise? Phreedom? This is hardly legal terminology.
This week, our cover story is a look into Philadelphia AIDS Thrift, an eclectic second hand shop at 514 S. Bainbridge St. celebrating both its fifth birthday and $250,000 donated to support the AIDS struggle in Philly. Also inside, we have a review of the new salon on campus, a review of Mediterranean-style tapas restaurant Barbuzzo from the perspective of a blind date and interviews with Hedwig and Broken Social Scene. We have your egos, your gossip and even and a quiz to help you decide whether to do a last-minute reshuffle your course load.
In conjunction with SPEC Film, Street Film is offering 5 pairs of reserved seats to the 7:30 Catfish screening tomorrow (Tues) at the Rave Theater (formerly The Bridge). The first people to comment with their name and requested number of seats (1 or 2) will win!
Campus area restaurants would really like to give you every excuse to eat out. 34th Street Food & Drink editors Jess Goodman and Josh Goldman bring you the low down on this fall's savory specials.
