Akiva Berkowitz | The newsletter is dead

(01/25/24 1:22am)

Last year, I wandered into the Penn Squash Center. This nondescript building is easy to miss and on a part of campus that many students may not find themselves by. Penn may not always hit the mark in the traditional sports arena. But when it comes to the high-stakes world of squash, they’ve apparently found their niche: investing in a stunning $15 million facility. After being allowed to borrow a racket and ball for free, I tried out a sport I had never considered before. Nowadays, I play often.

Abdulrahman Bindamnan | As a Penn alumnus, I am with former President Liz ‎Magill

(01/24/24 1:04am)

When Liz Magill assumed her role as president at ‎Penn, I wrote her an email asking ‎about something as benign as her writing ‎style. To my surprise and delight, Magill wrote back and shared that her ‎favorite wordsmith of all time is Adam ‎Smith, whose scholarship I have read ever since. ‎Her response to my simple inquiry shows that Magill truly cared about Penn ‎students and alumni. I have been deeply ‎inspired by her leadership and fascinating ‎background. Magill’s resignation is ‎a loss to my alma mater.

Mia Vesely | I dropped sorority rush and I’m glad

(01/23/24 4:09am)

I’ve always been wary of places that don’t make space for me. And as a Black woman at Penn — from a Title I public school in Arizona — I didn’t think Panhellenic sororities were for me. I came into college with the assumption that sororities were for a certain type of girl, but I decided I needed to experience the process before I could actually have an opinion on the matter. I can’t decide if it’s for better or for worse, but what I saw of sororities was exactly what I expected.
