From coaching turnovers, to injury comebacks and big wins, the Quakers have felt a wide range of emotions and were called to react in different ways. On Friday night, when Penn football’s fourth-quarter comeback effort fell short in a 30-26 loss to Brown, the immediate effects were clear: An addition to the loss column, a balancing of Penn’s Ivy League record at 2-2, and a significant deflation of the team’s Ivy League title hopes. But lost among those surface-level consequences was a much deeper concern: that the 2023 Penn football team may never reach its full potential.

Not since the “Water Buffalo” incident in 1993 has the Penn campus been roiled by the kind of polarization we’ve seen over the past month. Penn’s commitment to free speech is once again in question, and once again there are calls for Penn’s president to step down. From the buildup to the Palestine Writes Literature Festival (PWLF), held from Sept. 22 to 24, to the series of rallies and marches in response to the Hamas massacres in Israel on Oct. 7 and the ensuing Israeli attack on Gaza, Penn students and faculty have been debating and arguing. Some have stopped speaking to each other. Fear and anger are in the air – along with shock, hurt, and mistrust.

Last week, there was a solemn vigil hosted by Penn Hillel in memory of the civilians kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7. Feeling the strength, compassion, and unity among Penn’s Jewish community was truly something to behold. It was powerful to listen to the testimony of campus activists, who told stories of family and friends in Israel, and to hear my peers sing the Israeli national anthem in Hebrew.
