Our admiration for New York Magazine is well-documented, and when that fondness combines with a topic we are also have a keen interest in (binge drinking), we sit up and take notice. This week's magazine contains a thought-provoking feature on women, especially young women, and their drinking habits. Its thesis certainly gels with what we observe on campus on a regular basis: ladies love their drinks. And we don't necessarily begrudge social drinking, but on the other hand, we do worry about the larger implications of it. To wit:

If you stepped through College Green a few weeks back, you probably noticed the obnoxiously tall pile of trash outside of Van Pelt (with accompanying bulldozer) and the sea of discarded plastic water bottles staked across the lawn in the same manner that other groups have memorialized 9/11 or Iraq War casualties. Both displays were the work of Penn Environmental Group's Greenfest 2008, an event which strives to raise campus awareness of environmental issues. Both displays were also-I thought-more flashy than effective.

Hey, Matt Flegenheimer here from the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Ct. The wireless service in the press box has been out all day, but with the second half set to kick off, we're finally connected and ready to go. Yale leads 7-0 after 30 minutes, scoring on a 17-yard drive following a Robert Irvin interception on Penn's first drive. Yale tight end John Sheffield took a pass in the right flat from Yale's Brook Hart (starting in place of injured Ryan Fodor) and went in untouched for the score. With Irvin struggling early, Al Bagnoli has gone to junior Kyle Olson from the end of the first quarter through the first drive of the second half. Stay with the Buzz for live updates the rest of the way.

When I was in high school, I dated a younger guy off and on for a couple of years. For the most part, driving him everywhere and calling his mom for permission to go to the movies didn’t get to me, until one day when we were fooling around watching TV. Suddenly, on came the Pokemon theme song. Now, I would not be caught dead watching that show--even to this day, I much prefer quality old school Nicktoons to any anime bullshit (Sorry, D)--so to say it was alarming when my boyfriend squealed with excitement, “oh my god I looooove Pokemon. You’re my Pikachu!,” would be an understatement. When we officially broke up and I hooked up with my first college guy (a senior with a record deal) three days later, I concluded that never again would I rob the cradle. Until now.
