Top University officials, including Penn President Amy Gutmann, wrote to Penn affiliates undergraduates on Tuesday afternoon to express "deepest sympathies" in the wake of Hurricane Irma's "devastating impact."
"The outstanding team in Student Intervention Services is continuing to coordinate on behalf of our students with faculty, Student Financial Services, Risk Management, and other key resources," stated the email, which was also signed by Provost Wendell Pritchett and Executive Vice President Craig Carnaroli.
Penn's email urged any affected students to contact Student Intervention Services by calling 215-898-6081.
At least 42 people have died as a result of Hurricane Irma, which has devastated Florida, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and other southeastern parts of the United States. Approximately 62 percent of Florida residents are currently without power.
On Aug. 31, the same top three University officials addressed Hurricane Harvey in an email, which included many of the same resources and details. One difference between the emails about Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma is that, in the previous email, administrators said, "We have identified more than 600 students who are residents of the impacted areas...Our Schools have been reaching out directly to these students with plans for support."
The Hurricane Irma email contained no reference to how many Penn affiliates are directly affected by the storm.
