Penn women's soccer comeback falls short, losing to Cornell, 3-2

The Quakers couldn't overcome a three goal halftime deficit

It was too little, too late for Penn women's soccer on Friday night.

A final push by the Quakers wasn’t enough to come back from Cornell’s lead at Berman field. Even with a burst of momentum in the final minutes of the game, the Red and Blue fell, 3-2, losing their second straight Ivy match.

It took just two minutes for Cornell (6-3, 1-1 Ivy) to get on the board with a goal, as sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Crowell notched the score. The Big Red followed that goal with two more by halftime, putting the Red and Blue in the same 3-0 deficit that they lost by against Harvard.

However, Penn (3-3-2, 0-2) scrambled in the second to bring it back with a goal by senior back Haley Cooper in the 64th minute and a late score by sophomore midfielder Ana Chevtchenko in the 88th minute. The two late tallies were not enough to get the Quakers over the hump.

The game was Penn's first loss to Cornell in 18 years, having gone 16-0-1 against the Big Red in the 17 matches since 1996.

The Quakers look to Monday’s home game against Loyola to regroup before their next Ivy game against Columbia on October 10th.
