My name is Tess Niewood and I’m originally from Newton, Massachusetts. I went to a small private school called Maimonides from Kindergarten through 12th grade. What I loved most about my fifty-person high school class was that I could talk to my peers about everything, from class material to current events to the latest movies to shopping. One of my favorite things about Penn is that I can do that here as well. My goal as a member of the UA would be to foster community, so that every member of the freshman class has the opportunity to create meaningful, lasting relationships. Specifically I would want to increase interaction surrounding academic interest, as opposed to the hall based or activity based communities, which are already so strong on campus. I would do this by creating social events, and by creating pathways for people to discuss their academic interests.
