Employees at abortion clinic plead guilty to third-degree murder

The clinic performed illegal late-term abortions

Two women who worked in a West Philadelphia clinic just north of campus that performed illegal late-term abortions pleaded guilty to third-degree murder on Oct. 27.

Adrienne Moton admitted to killing a baby. Co-worker Kareema Cross accused her of cutting the neck of a newborn who had been delivered into a toilet, according to a Grand Jury report.

The report also claims that the clinic had killed babies by cutting their spinal cords on multiple occasions.

Sherry West pleaded guilty for the death of patient Karnamaya Mongar, who died of a fatal drug overdose allegedly administered by West during an abortion procedure.

Moton and West also pleaded guilty to related charges, such as running or conspiring to run a corrupt organization. West and Moton face up to 140 and 120 years in prison, respectively.

The Women’s Medical Society, located at 3801 Lancaster Avenue, was run by Kermit Gosnell for almost four decades. Gosnell has been charged with eight counts of murder, for the murder of Mongar and seven babies.

The clinic was raided in February of 2010, where the FBI and Drug Enforcement Agency found fetal remains “scattered throughout, in cabinets, in the basement, in a freezer, in jars and bags and plastic jugs,” according the grand jury report. “It was a baby charnel house.”

Gosnell has denied the allegations and is held on $2 million bail. According to the grand jury report, Gosnell was the only formally trained and licensed worker at the clinic.

In addition, clinic worker and Gosnell’s sister-in-law Elizabeth Hampton pleaded guilty to perjury charges Oct. 13. Gosnell and six others are awaiting trial. Gosnell’s next court appearance will be Nov. 17 for a pre-trial conference.
