Editorial | Our Greek choice

Delta Gamma should be the newest sorority because of its presence at many of Penn’s peer schools

Over the past few weeks, five sororities came to campus to discuss why they should become Penn’s newest chapter. The Panhellenic Council extension committee will make its decision by Sunday.

The five organizations have much in common. And the students who join the sorority will play a large role in shaping the chapter’s place on campus regardless of its letters. That being said, the national organization selected is important because national representatives are likely to be very involved in working with Penn students to build the new chapter.

Delta Gamma is the best choice. Of the five on the extension committee’s shortlist, Delta Gamma is at the largest number of Penn’s peer institutions — including Columbia, Cornell, Duke and Northwestern universities. The sorority also has a large student and alumni presence in the Philadelphia area.

Students may be drawn to joining a sorority in part because of its networking opportunities, and Delta Gamma can provide Penn women with many well-educated and local contacts. Delta Gamma’s familiarity with other Ivy and Ivy-equivalent schools means that national representatives know how to relate to students like those at Penn. As a result, they will be comfortable building a chapter at a school where academics are highly emphasized.

We look forward to welcoming the new sorority to campus, and hope a strong eighth chapter is created.
