Two separate leaks in a water line of the Quadrangle left residents without water for large parts of Tuesday and Wednesday - and plenty to say about it.
The first water main break was identified last Friday, according to Jennifer Rizzi, a spokeswoman for Facilities and Real Estate Services.
Housing Services shut down the water on Tuesday morning in response to the "substantial leak in the water line that runs from Hamilton Walk to Foerderer," according to an e-mail sent by Paul Forchielli, Residential Services Administrator of Housing Services, to students affected by the water break.
He initially said the shutdown would be restricted to the Upper Quad, but later stated that residences along Hamilton Walk to 36th Street were also affected.
Water returned to the residences early Tuesday evening.
A second leak in the water line occurred on Wednesday morning, resulting in another shutdown. The same areas were affected.
"The problem this morning is a break in a water main further east near the Richards Building," Forchielli said in an e-mail. "The Philadelphia Water Department is on their way to fix the main."
Water returned around 10 p.m., and the water line was fully restored at 2 a.m. Thursday morning, Rizzi said.
"It was a big inconvenience," College freshman Isabel Collyns said. "I had to buy water bottles. And not using the bathrooms was a major problem."
A Facebook event was created in response to the shutdown.
"The multiple water outages the past several days has shown us that we cannot stand still and expect our thirst for hydration to be quenched," the event description said.
Others criticized the way the situation was handled.
"The shutdown was annoying," said Wharton freshman Shamez Hemani, who joined the event. "They could have handled it better. [They could have] done it before the semester began, before kids got on campus."
