Hillel repairs take place quickly after weekend water damage

Hillel is up and running again after flooding on Saturday from a sprinkler break caused the building to close for about 24 hours.

"We worked diligently that day and night to make sure the building was accessible to everyone the next day," said Hillel Operations Director Bob Williams.

The amount of water in the building was significant -- according to Williams, over 1,100 gallons were extracted on Saturday.

The only room that was not completely open on Sunday was the first floor living room. However, parts of the room were still accessible, Williams said. The elevator is up and running, and most of the building looks "like nothing ever happened," he added.

The exact monetary extent of the damage has not been determined, he said, but areas of the first floor living room, the rotunda, the Ricklis Lounge, the main elevator, about half of the basement and a portion of the dining area were affected.

"The major components that affect the building have been repaired or replaced at this time," Williams said.

He added that several large repairs have yet to be made, including the replacement of rugs in several rooms, the woodworking in the living room, the front desk and some furniture.

These repairs will be made when the building's insurance approves them.
