McCain
The McCain plan is based on "Four Pillars of Reform:" Affordability, Access and Choice, Portability and Security, and Quality.
The senator says he will make health care more affordable by ensuring competition between insurance companies, drug companies, hospitals and doctors.
According to McCain, Americans should have access to the coverage of their choice, including the option of keeping their current coverage.
He will give individuals a $2,500 tax credit and families a $5,000 credit to offset the cost of insurance.
McCain wants Americans to be able keep their coverage if they move. He plans to strengthen health-care quality by promoting "wellness" as well as research and development of new treatment models.
Obama
The Obama heath-care plan seeks to build on the existing private health-care system while offering a new government alternative.
Under his plan, if you want to continue your current insurance coverage, you will be able to.
If you don't have coverage, or you don't like your present coverage, you will have new insurance options, including a new public plan based on benefits currently available to members of Congress.
Obama claims that a family's insurance costs will decrease by as much as $2,500 under his plan primarily because of increased competition among insurance companies and lower drug costs.
He proposes using generic drugs in public programs and allowing medicine to be imported from other countries.
Other features of his plan include requiring insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, creating a small-business tax credit, and covering a portion of the catastrophic health costs of businesses that lower premiums for their employees.
