News Brief | Penn Presbyterian appoints new chief of surgery

Penn Presbyterian Medical Center announced Tuesday that Kenric Michael Murayama will assume the role of chief of surgery, effective Sept. 15.

Murayama - an expert in advanced laparoscopic surgery - now serves as professor of surgery and chief of General Surgery at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, where he has also served as director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program and associate chairman for robotics and emerging technologies.

He has also been the director of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, as well as director of the Queen's Comprehensive Weight Management Program, which he developed four years ago.

In addition to his ample experience, Murayama has received several awards in teaching, including Teacher of the Year for three consecutive years while at St. Louis University and Northwestern University's Medical School.

In his new position, Murayama will oversee all surgical services at Penn Presbyterian.

"We are very fortunate to have a physician of Dr. Murayama's caliber as our new chief of surgery," Penn Presbyterian executive director and chief executive officer Michele Volpe said in a press release. "Dr. Murayama's strong leadership, collaborative and technical skills will take our department of surgery to the next level."
