A jellybean collage made in 2004 to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK day is this Monday and offers a variety of service events around Philadelphia.

Celebrate the long weekend by acknowledging why we have one in the first place: Martin Luther King, Jr.

Head to the Franklin Institute Science Museum to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King on the anniversary of his 79th birthday.

The museum's three-day celebration kicks off Saturday at 5 p.m. with a performance by the Intermezzo Choir Ministry, whose musical repertoire includes anthems, traditional and contemporary gospels, spirituals and hymns. After the concert, catch one of two consecutive screenings of Dr. King's famous "I have a dream" speech, which will be shown at 6 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m.

Enjoy a presentation by Temple University professor Dr. Molefi Asante at 7 p.m., who will discuss his upcoming photo-essay book, Black Identity in Philadelphia, as well as sell copies of Egypt vs. Greece and the American Academy, an anthology of essays exploring European misconceptions of African history.

The Franklin Institute will continue the MLK spirit through Sunday with ongoing showings of the "I have a dream" speech, which Dr. King delivered 45 years ago.

On Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., participate in the museum's special scavenger hunt, which will focus on African-American scientists.

Also at 11 a.m., children's recording artist "Daria" will pay a musical tribute to Dr. King by performing her version of "I have a dream," complete with guiros, shekeres, washboards, didgeridoos, rainsticks, and pow-wow drums.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can peruse the museum's "Celebration of Excellence" display, which will feature 20 African-Americans who have made significant contributions to science and technology, including heart surgery pioneer Daniel Hale Williams and surgeon and researcher Charles Bridges. The portable sign exhibit will be on view through the end of February to commemorate Black History Month.

Saturday's events are free of charge, but registration is required: call the Institute at 215-448-1254 to reserve your spot. Enjoy half-price admission to the museum on Monday if you bring a canned food donation for Philabundance, the food rescue organization that works to end hunger and malnutrition in the Delaware Valley.

The Franklin Institute Science Museum is located at 222 North 20th St. in Philadelphia.
