News Brief: UA gets funding for free 'Times' service

Over the next few months, students will be able to thank the Undergraduate Assembly for replenishing dining supplies on campus and providing them with free copies of The New York Times.

Major topics from Sunday night's meeting include:

n College Republicans Chairman and Wharton senior Michael Shiely spoke about the lack of political awareness on campus during Open Forum.

Shiely said political groups on campus deserve more funding from places like the Student Activities Council, which does not fund political groups in an effort to remain non-partisan.

n As of January, the UA will bring copies of The New York Times to College Houses and other campus buildings on Mondays through Fridays.

n UA member and College freshman Jay Rodrigues said that 1920 Commons will be receiving new utensils within two weeks in response to student complaints about a shortage in supply.

n Vice-chairwoman and Engineering senior Dipal Patel showed construction plans for the new student-health center, slated to open at 3535 Market St. in June 2008.

n College sophomores Enoch Arthur-Asmah and Claire Choi, College senior Bing Chen and College freshman Matt Amalfitano gave an update of Ivy Council activities.

They discussed internal reorganization, an initiative to reach out to high school students applying to Ivy league schools and February's Leadership Summit conference at Penn, which will feature 30 speakers, including Ed Rendell and former Miss Virginia 2003 Nancy Redd.
