News Brief: 64 freshmen gear up for student gov't

64 freshmen candidates are vying for 74 student government-related positions for this academic year.

They gathered last night in Logan Hall to confirm their candidacy with the Nominations and Elections Committee.

Ten of the candidates are especially ambitious, running for both an Undergraduate Assembly seat and a position on the Class Board.

NEC vice-chairwoman for elections Colleen Donovan led the meeting and briefed the candidates on major campaigning rules, spending over 20 minutes answering questions on campaign spending alone.

"It was a good sign because it shows that they are trying to avoid violations being filed and protect their campaign," she said of the time allotted for those questions.

The candidates, whom Donovan says have been very involved in the election process, had a variety of campaign-related questions, including rules about dancing and performing on Locust Walk in order to attract attention.

Candidates voiced many reasons for running, but a majority pointed to bad experiences with Penn Dining services.

"There were no forks, no cups, they were out of milk, and there was no chicken," College freshman Jay Rodriguez said, referring to one of his experiences at 1920 Commons. "Plus, it was only 7 p.m., and they close at 8 p.m."

Rodriguez is one of three candidates running for SAS representative.

Other candidates said they were inspired to run based on previous UA accomplishments.

"They seem like the major groups that actually gets things done," College freshmen Jacqueline Chaudhry said.

Chaudhry is running for one of the eight UA seats.
