Senior outfielder Susan McIlvane is tagged out by Delaware catcher Quinn Megargel during Penn's sweep of the Blue Hens Wednesday.

The Penn softball team (7-5) still doesn't know who it's playing during Saturday's doubleheader at Warren Field.

It could be the St. Joseph's team that has thrown a perfect game, or it could be the other version of the team, which has gone 7-15.

The Quakers lost to the Hawks in the fall during the preseason and didn't play well, according to coach Leslie King, but they think they will match up better this time.

The Hawks are coming off two losses to Boston University and hope to turn their season around. But the highlight of their year was junior pitcher Lauren Cognini's perfect game against Robert Morris, the only player to throw such a game in Hawks history.

King was thrilled with her team's gritty come-from-behind wins against Delaware on Wednesday and thinks the momentum will boost confidence Saturday.

She was "pleased with the team's ability to come back yesterday and we did overcome some adversity - the pitching staff and the defense - to come back and get two wins over a team we haven't beat in some time," King said.

After battling from behind in both wins, the Quakers hope to take the early lead, but if they can't, King won't be worried.

"Hopefully we can keep teams from scoring early and if we don't we know we can come from behind," King said alluding to her team's potent offense.

The team has averaged 5.25 runs per game and 7 runs per game in its last three wins.

"Our challenge is always keeping us in the game with our pitching and defense," King said. "If we can keep ourselves in the game and give ourselves a chance to win then I feel confident that our offense can come up with the runs."

The second dose of action this weekend will come in a doubleheader against the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

The Devils, struggling with a 3-9 record, boast a standout hitter in Sarina Lavooy. The outfielder brought her career-hit tally to 130 in USP's recent game against American International College and became the Devil's all-time hits leader.

With that in mind, the Quakers need to shore up their defense, having committed five errors leading to three unearned runs in just the first Delaware game.

But with conference games coming up and a smoking offense, Penn hopes to work out its defensive kinks.

"It's just a matter of having a couple of solid defensive games and getting their confidence back up," King said.
