James Baker, a former secretary of state and co-chairman of the Iraq Study Group, will address the Class of 2007 at Penn's 251st commencement on May 14.

Baker will be joined by six honorary degree recipients, including Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and R&B; songstress Aretha Franklin.

Baker served as secretary of state under President George H. W. Bush. He had previously served as secretary of the treasury under President Ronald Reagan and secretary of commerce for President Gerald Ford. Baker was also White House chief of staff for Reagan and the elder Bush.

A graduate of Princeton University, Baker's name has been in the news most recently for co-chairing the Iraq Study Group, a bi-partisan panel commissioned by Congress to study the U.S.'s involvement in Iraq.

Penn President Amy Gutmann praised Baker for his long career and history of bi-partisanship.
