Sports Brief: Track teams run in stride, place third

Both the men and women's track teams placed third in their respective meets at the Ivy Heptagonals in New York City this weekend.

The men rode a strong performance in the heptathalon, as Kyle Calvo won the event with 5,427 points and Max Westman came in third with 5,239 points.

Other strong performers on the men's side were Tim Kaijala, who won the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:25.72, and John Guzman, who came in second place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.49. Joey Brown, Sam Shepherd and Bryan Scotland rounded out the strong performance. They came in second, sixth, and fourth place in the 60 meter, 400 meter, and 500 meter dashes, respectively.

For the women, Shani Boston and Shaunee Morgan led the way with 18 and 16 points, respectively.

Stacy Kim came in first place in the mile run, which brought in another 10 points for Penn.

A notable accomplishment was Jesse Carlin's resetting of the Penn school record in the 800 meter run. She broke her previous school record, set earlier this season, by shaving over a second off of her time. She finished in 2:07.59.

Both teams' strengths seemed to be in the track, not field events. While they mustered a couple of second-place finishes, there were no wins in those events.
