Penn's Mid-Atlantic Gigapop in Philadelphia - an advanced networking computer center - has connected to the Internet2 Network, University officials announced last week.
Internet2, the most advanced networking center in the U.S., provides Internet to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.
The new network on campus boasts an Internet speed of 100 Gigabits-per-second.
Penn has also used Internet2 to conduct research in tele-immersion - the process of connecting users from various locations, as if they were actually in the same place - and distributed telepathology consults within its School of Medicine that facilitates the study of medical images.
MAGPI also provides regional and Internet2 connection to other institutions in the tri-state area, and has been promoting research and education since 1997.
"We are delighted to support the extension of our Internet2 hub," University Provost Ronald Daniels said in a press statement. "Connectivity has empowered teaching and research on this campus in countless ways."
