Last time Frank Elegar and Chaz Crawford played at the Palestra, it wasn't pretty.
Drexel's frontcourt duo, greatly outplayed by Penn's Mark Zoller and Steve Danley, was held to a combined 11 points on 3-for-10 shooting in the Dragons' loss.
So in their latest game in the Palestra, Elegar and Crawford decided to make up for it.
Elegar scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, and Crawford blocked seven shots as the Dragons outplayed St. Joseph's in every phase of the game during their 72-56 win.
The Dragons (4-2) used a 14-0 run in the first half to quiet a very partisan crowd at the St. Joe's home game.
A large part of the win came from 'Frank the Tank,' as Elegar was dubbed by the Drexel student section. He more than doubled his average of 10.6 points per game.
For Elegar, there was no better time to come up big.
"We lost to them last year in a tough one, so I just wanted to get one back," he said.
Things did not improve for the Hawks frontcourt, which saw 13 of their shots rejected by the Dragons.
While Pat Calathes played well with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting, the 0-for-5 from Nivins and a combined 9-for-31 from the freshman quartet of Garrett Williamson, D.J. Rivera, Darrin Govens and Jawan Carter meant too little offensive production for the Hawks to overcome.
After the game, Hawks coach Phil Martelli didn't regret the game plan, just his team's shot selection.
"I don't have any problem with trying to go at somebody," Martelli said. "I thought there were times when bad shots were blocked, not necessarily good moves that were rejected."
Meanwhile, the Dragons are reveling in this victory.
"I wanted to get a win here because it's my last time playing at the Palestra," Elegar said. "So it's real special."
